Teachers in the early years are highly skilled in assessing the attainment of children on entry to the school, including from information gleaned from home visits. This robust baseline assessment means that staff have a clear understanding of children's needs and so plan effective learning activities to meet these needs. The responsiveness to meeting children's needs is at the heart of the effective teaching in the early years.
